Minyanaires

The Minyanaires program provides intensified Bar/Bat Mitzvah preparation for 6th and 7th graders and their parents. Monthly gatherings on Sunday mornings include special discussions with the rabbi, and also encourage parents to network with each other.

At Congregation Brit Shalom, the Bar or Bat Mitzvah leads a traditional Shabbat morning service, with the rabbi's assistance. The Bar/Bat Mitzvah chants the Maftir portion of the Torah and the Haftorah, and also presents a D'var Torah talk. Bar and Bat Mitzvah candidates must prepare for a minimum of two years, including attendance at both Religious School and Hebrew School, and participation in the Minyanaires program. In addition, the candidate must begin to attend Saturday morning services. Sixth-graders should attend at least once per month; seventh graders should attend at least twice per month. Requirements may be modified to accomodate a candidate who is learning-disabled.

In the final year of preparation, Bar and Bat Mitzvah candidates meet regularly with the rabbi. If a candidate needs additional help to prepare, the Religious School can assist the family to find a personal tutor.
